Common scams to watch for

The 'tech support' call

Someone rings claiming to be Microsoft, BT or your bank, and asks you to install something so they can 'fix' your computer. Hang up. Every time.

The 'Hi Mum' message

A text or WhatsApp from a new number claiming to be your child, who urgently needs money. Ring your child on their old number first.

The parcel or bill text

A missed delivery, an unpaid toll or an energy refund, with a link to a fake website. Don't click it.

The alarming pop-up

A loud warning saying your computer is infected and you must call a number. It's fake.

The 'safe account' call

Your 'bank's fraud team' asks you to move money to keep it safe. Real banks never do this.

The too-good-to-be-true friend

Someone lovely you've met online who, sooner or later, needs money for an emergency.

Do these things now

  1. Hang up and disconnect. If someone is on your computer, end the call, then turn off the Wi-Fi or unplug the internet cable.
  2. Call your bank. Dial 159 from any phone to reach most UK banks' fraud teams, or use the number on the back of your card. Use a different phone if you can.
  3. Change your passwords. Start with your email, then online banking, from a device you know is safe.
  4. Report it. Report fraud to Action Fraud, the UK's national reporting service. Forward scam texts to 7726 and scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.
  5. Call me. I'll check your computer or phone, remove anything the scammer installed and make sure your accounts are secure.

How I help after a scam

  • Find and remove remote-access software or anything else the scammer installed
  • Check your email for hidden rules or forwarding the scammer may have set up
  • Lock down your accounts with new passwords and two-step sign-in
  • Explain what happened, without judgement, so you'll spot it next time
  • Talk it through with family members too, if that helps

My promise

I will never phone, text or email you out of the blue asking to access your computer. If anyone claims to be from Sussex Tech Rescue and you weren't expecting them, hang up and call me on 07734 779429 to check.
